A small, founder-led team building software with the same straight talk we wish every vendor used.
Sawbuck Software isn't a giant catalog company or a venture-backed growth machine. We're craftspeople and operators who got tired of paying enterprise prices for tools that still needed three consultants to turn on.
At heart we're prospectors — a team that got fed up with too many “e‑commerce” outfits and adjacent industries built to overcharge folks for products and services that never earned the invoice. We didn't strike out on our own because panning was glamorous; we did it because watching honest customers get shaken down stopped sitting right with us.
Rusty isn't just a mascot — he stands for how we work: show up, dig in, and only ship what we'd stake our own sawbuck on. When you write us, you're talking to people who answer for the product, not a ticket queue three time zones away.
Meet the team
We're five people — builders and operators who answer email with our real names. Here's who does what.
Dustin "Dusty" Miller
Founder & product
Dusty started Sawbuck after one too many run-ins with software bills that looked nothing like the brochure. He draws the line on what ships, what stays at a sawbuck, and what's fool's gold — and yes, he's the reason there's a DustyMillerMerchant: merchants deserve straight books without getting shaken down. Rusty's attitude? Partially inherited.
Christian "Crag" Hardcastle
Engineering
The Demolitions Expert — named for the jagged rock faces he carves with explosives. Rusty's younger brother.
Crag runs builds, tests, and production releases — if something blows up in the field, he traces the fuse and fixes it. The nickname stuck because his blast patterns cut clean facets into stone like crags on a ridgeline; in software he applies the same precision — clearing legacy rubble to make room for code that actually stands up. Same frontier stubbornness as his brother — just tuned for servers instead of sluice boxes.
Montgomery "Moss" Sterling
Customer voice
The Cartographer / Geologist — spends so much time in the damp dark he's practically part of the cave floor.
Moss maps what customers actually hit in the wild — support tickets, onboarding friction, and the quiet gripes that never make the sales deck. He charts feedback like strata in a mine: layer by layer until the truth surfaces. When you write in, odds are Moss has already traced your path through the product — lamp on his helmet, boots damp, and your voice headed straight to the roadmap.
Gertrude "Grit" O'Malley
Design & experience
The Enforcer / Miner — tough as the stone she hauls and never backs down from a fight.
Grit owns how Sawbuck looks, reads, and feels — UX, messaging, and brand, Rusty included — and she doesn't ship prettiness for its own sake. If a screen can confuse an honest merchant, she treats it like loose timber in a drift: shore it up or tear it out. Same backbone whether she's polishing copy or wrestling layout until the product hits as clean as a split face of granite.
Beatrice "Brass" Banks
Operations
The Assayer & Negotiator — bold, loud, and has the nerve to stare down any merchant in town.
Brass runs the back office that keeps Sawbuck upright — partnerships, finance, licensing, and the paperwork nobody applauds. She assays every deal like ore at the assay office: weight, purity, and whether someone's trying to slip slag past the counter. When terms need tightening or a vendor gets cute with the invoice, she's the voice at the table you don't out-shout — she just waits until the numbers tell the truth.
